"Hells Tubular Bells"

Retailers such as Woolworths are hopping mad about the latest perceived threat to their ability to sell CDs in their stores. Its all to do with newspapers offering free covermounts to their readers. A covermount is the name given to the CD or DVD that comes free with the newspaper or magazine. The Mail on Sunday had as its covermount the original Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield on CD. Retailers claim that offering the complete album for the price of the newspaper is obviously going to negatively impact on sales in the shops. An EMI spokesperson claims that sales in fact were up since the promotion of the "giveaway".

Your Rhythm Stick

EMI will release in May for the first time albums on USB memory sticks. Although singles have been released on this medium it's a potential exciting and new way to sell music and a format that few would have anticipated. Hopefully for record labels their recording contracts with their artists would have had a clause that will entitle them to include and control the sale of music using a memory stick. One problem at the moment though is that the sales of the sticks will not count in calculating chart position.

Anti-Whistle Blower Law Delayed

New laws restricting authors from publishing anything that may "cause damage to international relations, may cause damage to national security and may cause damage to the confidential relationships between ministers, and between ministers and civil servants, or which would inhibit the free and frank exchange of view and advice within government" has been delayed. This will free the way for Alistair Campbell's memoirs to be published. It is estimated that it will earn £1 million from serialisation rights alone. Some are questioning whether the delay has been deliberately created by Downing Street to help their old friend.
